Sunday - Frequently Asked Questions

Or more accurately, Asked Questions.

Trial Version

What's different in the trial version?
The trial version has all the basic features of Sunday, with the restriction that you can only add up to 20 individuals to the database. The full version has these extra features:
  • Enter as many individuals as you need. There is a limit of 8998, but if you have that many people you've probably got bigger issues.
  • Change the background picture - for example to a picture of your group.
  • Database backup, just in case.
  • Change the default password.
Do I need to buy a printer and a barcode scanner to try it out?
No. You can pretend you have them by writing down the barcodes you create (e.g. 09PNK6790) and just typing them into the swipe box (and pressing Enter) instead.

Costs

What do I need?
Have a look at this page.
What does it all cost?
  • A registration key for Sunday costs $200.
  • The cheapest barcode scanner I've seen costs $100 - $150.
  • The label printer costs about $170, plus you'll need some labels. See below.
Prices in NZ dollars.
Do you sell a package with the printer and scanner too?
No. Not yet anyway. Sorry.

Software

Where's my information stored? Will other people be able to able to look at it?
All the information recorded by Sunday is stored within a folder on your computer, near all the other information Firefox might know about you, such as your bookmarks. So no, other people won't be able to look at it.
What's my password?
changeme - it's a hint. You can't actually change it with the trial version.
Does it work on a Mac?
Yes. Most of the instructions given here are for Windows users, but are the same in principle for Mac. I don't have much chance to test things on Mac, so if something doesn't look right please email me.

Barcode Scanning

I'm looking at the barcode scanner from Dick Smith. Do I need the extra cable?
Probably. Most recent laptops and a lot of recent desktop computers no longer support the older (PS/2, round) plug, only the newer (USB, rectangular) plug. Have a look at your computer, if it has a socket that looks like this (may or may not be purple), you don't need the extra cable:
PS/2 Plug and Socket

Barcode Printing

Do I need to buy a label printer?
No. They're handy, but you don't need one. I'm currently working on a way to print out nametags with barcodes on them, rather than printing labels and sticking them to nametags.
What size labels should I get?
Dymo has labels sized 89×36mm. I reckon these ones are the best.
How should I configure the label printer?
After you've installed the label printer (using the instructions that come with it), find it in the Printers folder, right-click and select Properties. Click Printing Preferences, then Advanced. Make sure that the paper size matches the labels you've got, and that print quality (near the bottom) is set to Barcodes and Graphics. I know, it's complicated. Don't blame me.
My labels get printed in the wrong place. Can I fix it?
Firstly check you have the right label size (see the previous question). You can also make minor adjustments to the margins by clicking on printer options in Sunday (not the trial version). The Dymo printer doesn't seem to print things in the right place for some reason.
