They've achieved all I ever set out to do, and a lot more - if it wasn't for thousands of users I would've stopped developing them ages ago. Here's what's left to do (probably not until closer to the release of Firefox 4):

The Shrunked options dialog needs to take advantage of some of the first code I ever wrote for Mozilla. This will make it incompatible with Firefox 3.5, but that doesn't really matter any more.

I'd also like to be able to remove the resampling code introduced in Shrunked 2.5, but Mozilla needs to do a better job of image resampling themselves first.

Open With has a fancy new options tab, replacing the cramped dialog box. I'm waiting to see how things pan out with the new about:addons page before I make final decisions on releasing that.

As always, thanks for using my software, and don't forget to send me some appreciation in currency form.

I'm sick of looking at Javascript

I've been trying to figure out a bug that's reportedly been plaguing Shrunked for a month. I've only just managed to reproduce it, and I think I've finally solved the problem.

I really, really don't want to see any more Javascript for a few weeks. Thank God it's holidays next week and I can hang out with some humans for a change.

New versions of Open With and Shrunked

Over the past few weeks I've been working my butt off (NOT!) on new versions of Open With (v4) and Shrunked (v2.5).

Open With is undergoing a major rewrite to make it more flexible and better performing. So far I've eliminated large chunks of repetitive code. The next phase which is almost ready is moving the core of the addon into a javascript module so that all the heavy lifting is only performed once when needed (before, it would happen for each window you had open).

Shrunked has picked up some code contributed from some users - it now scales images with much better quality, and in the next version will handle EXIF data from digital cameras.

A Shrunked Update

Shocking, yes I know, but I've actually been working on Shrunked. It now handles multiple file uploads (new to Firefox 3.6), is localized (thank you www.babelzilla.org), and has at last been approved at AMO, so you'll get updates, if I ever get around to working on it again.

Rant: addons.mozilla.org

According to AMO, 700 people use my addon, Shrunked. Despite the fact that it's been a month since release, less than 20% of them use the latest version, which is far superior to the previous versions. Here is why:

The addon is 'experimental'. No it isn't, it long since stopped being an experiment. 700 people use it without problems.

People who install 'experimental' addons apparently don't deserve to know when a newer version is available. Surely these users are more likely to want to know that.

AMO reviewers keep finding things wrong with it without giving me any useful information about how to replicate their problems. I can't progress from 'experimental' without a reviewer's approval.

Like a lot of Mozilla things, I think AMO has a fair amount of potential. If only they'd spare the person-hours to make something decent of it.

Now compatible with Firefox 3.5's Private Browsing mode - won't offer to remember site-based preferences for you

Cleans up after itself - won't leave files lying around in your temporary files folder

An icon!

If you're wondering what happened to beta 2 (and I bet you're dying to know), I fixed up a flaw in b1 which could have damaged your profile. Probably wouldn't, but could.

Anywho, same link as before.

[edit] Shrunked 1.0b1 for Thunderbird 3 is also now available, get it from https://s19367.gridserver.com/software/addons/shrunked-tb@darktrojan.net.xpi.

Shrunked 1.5 beta 1

Hellooo!

I've almost completely rewritten Shrunked, it should now work on any website - including Facebook and GMail which previously had known issues.

I'm currently testing and polishing it. You can get a beta of the new version from https://s19367.gridserver.com/software/addons/shrunked@darktrojan.net.xpi. It's missing a few icons and things and needs a bit more work, but so far it has been pretty good. Try it out.

Cheers Microsoft, you've made my day...

... tossers.

So I've been thinking about upgrading Shrunked so that it works on any form (including ones created using javascript - Facebook, GMail, etc.). Turns out that listening for the form 'onsubmit' event won't work if the submission was caused by a script.

Culprit? Internet Explorer.

Copied by everyone else, in the name of 'backwards compatibility'? You bet.

Outcome? Shrunked probably won't ever work properly. FS.
