Introducing Sunday

Sunday

My barcode attendance system, Sunday, is now available for anyone to try out. Originally developed for St Columba, I've spent the last two months rewriting it to be flexible and robust enough for anyone to use.

This is not a new software product (we've used it at St Columba since early 2008), but previously it's only been used in one situation.

What is it?

Sunday is a system for tracking who's attending your Sunday school, after-school programme or whatever - without having to waste time and paperwork on a roll-call. Each participant gets a unique barcode for their nametag, which you read with a barcode reader each time they come to your programme. Sunday can then tell you exactly who attended each time, and when somebody last attended.

How much does it cost?

From now until November 30, Sunday has the special introductory cost of NZ$150. On December 1 the price will rise to $200. If you buy early you won't miss out on any of the updates.

If you're interested in using barcode attendance-tracking at your programme in 2010, please try Sunday out. It costs you nothing to try it except a bit of your time.

If you have any questions please email sunday@darktrojan.net.

How do I get it?

Current situation:

The best time to start using something like this is most likely at the start of the year, so until then I'll be concentrating on making sure everything is ready in time for you to use it. Current priorities are:

  • Working with printers other than the Dymo LabelWriter (which is a fantastic machine, I recommend it, but they're not cheap). I'm thinking of creating an A4 sheet of nametags with printed-on names and barcodes ready to be chopped up and laminated.
  • Importing names/group data from other programs, this will probably use the comma-separated values (CSV) format and possibly one other if there's demand.
  • Creating a simple issue-tracking list on this website so that you can see the state of play and request things. Please note that you can also get your issues higher priority if you bribe me. (I know the Bible says bribery is bad, but this is hardly an issue of justice, is it?)
